Me with 2 of my Grainger High Students
students studying Art Basics Course
In 1996 I joined AmeriCorps, Serve and Learn.
I developed a program of Environmental Arts, loaded up my van with art supplies and my dog Olive
and traveled to 4 rural Tennessee schools in the mountains of Hancock County.

These schools were multiple grade classrooms with less than 75 students.
The children had never had the opportunity to study art or take part in an art project.
It was one of the most fulfilling programs I've ever been part of.
Later after I became a licensed teacher I was able to teach some of the same students
when they closed all the rural schools and built a new county elementary school.

.
When the grant ended I was offered my current job with the
Grainger County Board of Education teaching high school art.

At first I found the job quite challenging.
I had always worked with the younger students and veered away from the older students.
But after the first few weeks the students and I settled in and developed
a wonderful relationship which I enjoy and look forward to each day.

During the summer I worked with the Community Partners on a 21st Century grant.
I developed and managed an art camp free to any child in the community.
I did this for 5 years until I no longer could devote the time needed

due to returning to college for my licensure.

After receiving my license I taught in the elementary school for 3 years
until a state wide budget crunch of teachers and I was laid off.

I then rejoined AmeriCorps VISTA where for 2 years I served the artists of 5 counties
with grant writing, computer training, web site design, art work slides and small business planning.

While in the cabin  started developing my Arts Basics Course,
a comprehensive study course for children of all ages,
from the beginner and intermediate
to those who wish to rediscover the basics of art.
Perfect for home school, so many of my friends who were home schooling their children
brought them to our cabin for art lessons.

All the lessons and projects are kid tested in grades kindergarten-12th grades.

When we moved to the cabin we didn't have
electricity, running water or a telephone
and since editors don't write letters to request artwork,
I had to come up with a different way to get mine published.

So, I started writing articles to go along with the illustrations.
This was very exciting and opened up an entire new world of writing for me.
I combined my three passions of
fine arts, country herbal living and sharing my knowledge.
In 1980 we moved to the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee.
We purchased 40 acres of mountain land in a hollow
along
Byrd Creek back in Black Sheep Hollow in Hancock County.
Here we homesteaded and learned everything we could from the wonderful local folks.
We used our horse Dan to plow the only flat land we had which was an 8 acre corn field.
We carried our water from a clear spring up 250 feet to our 100+ year old log cabin.
I made bread, baskets, wreaths and candles to name a few.
I created raised bed gardens to grow herbs and vegetables.
We raised chickens, ducks, geese, goats, 14 cats and 3 dogs.
It was a great time full of adventures, enough to write about.
In the meantime
I was working as a free-lance artist for several magazines such as
Farmstead Magazine, Vegetarian Times, and Rodale Press.
Then finally in the year 2000 I went back to college and received my
art education degree and teacher licensure from the East Tennessee State University.

My formal training is in drawing and printmaking.

During college in the 70's, I became interested in the simple back to earth, natural ways of life.
I have spent most of my life in the pursuit of
my artistic views of country herbal life.

In the late 70's I opened New Leaf 'natural foods' Deli
in Metamora, Indiana.
For 3 years I made good healthy soups and sandwiches for the tourists and my friends.
During this time I started compiling recipes and ideas on herbal, natural foods cooking.

In the late 70's we answered an ad in Mother Earth News

to restore and live in an original hand hewn log cabin on the Buckeye Trail in Chesterhill, Ohio.
There we got our first taste of primitive homesteading
without electricity, running water or any conveniences.

We were surrounded by Amish farms
and learned everything we could from these wonderful new friends.

My husband learned more about
using woodworking hand tools and restoring a log cabin.
I learned how to cook on a wood stove and forage from the forest.
It was a beautiful romantic world
filled with the hardest work I had every experience up to that point.
